Fun Ideas to Practice ABCs with Your Child

Being able to recognize the letters of the alphabet is an important pre-requisite to both reading and writing. Unfortunately learning and practicing letters can be a bit boring. Make it more fun with some of these ideas to help your child practice the ABCs.

Make Your Own Flash Cards

Make your own set of flash cards with your child. Just get some blank index cards and write each letter of the alphabet on a separate card. If your child is just learning letters, it may be helpful to draw a picture of one or two things that start with that letter on each card as well. Alternatively, you can cut items out of magazines and glue them on the flash cards.

Letter Memory

There are two versions to play this game. For each you will need some blank index cards. For younger readers, write each letter of the alphabet on a separate card. Next make some matching cards that have an item that starts with that particular letter drawn on them. For example, you could have the letter “A” and a corresponding card with an apple drawn on it. Play like you usually play memory.

The more advanced alternative is to write the upper and lower case version of a letter on separate cards and have your child match them up in the memory game.

What Letter Does This Start With?

To help your child practice writing letters, grab a magazine and point to pictures of different items. Ask your child to write the letter the word starts with. Give your child a point for each correct answer and tally them up at the end. You can also offer a reward like a sheet of stickers for a certain amount of points.

Keep it fun and interesting and make sure these feel like games, not like homework to your child. If your child is having fun, learning is much more likely to occur.
