Boys & Girls Clubs Need Mentors
by Kim Roberts

Description: Reasons why you should consider being a mentor for the Boys and Girls Club of America.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America need more mentors. They help kids across the country, but more and more are getting turned away because they have no mentors to pair them up with. The clubs especially need more male mentors.

Mae O’Brien of the Bucks County, PA chapter, contributes the lack of mentors at the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to misconceptions. She says that many people think it's a bigger time commitment than it really is.

Mentors are only asked to spend an hour or two at least once a month with their mentees, or "littles" as they're called. In some cases mentors may be asked to give an hour each week.

And, there is no money requirement. Mentors are never asked to buy their "littles" anything. In fact, that is discouraged. O'Brien said that's because they don't want the mentees to expect to get anything when they're with their mentors.

Mentoring really is a fun, easy and rewarding job according to most mentors. O'Brien said most of the time that mentors will play a game, watch a movie, or just include the "little" in regular family activities like washing a car or grocery shopping.

Making a child feel included does wonders for their all-around development. Simple activities such as the ones above are extremely helpful to the mentees. Studies show that their grades go up, their confidence increases, and they typically stay out of trouble.

The mentees are not the only ones benefitting from the relationships, though. Mentors also report they feel happier when they help out the mentees. They feel they have a real purpose. They also report learning a lot from the children they are mentoring.
