Daily Devotions Week One: “Thinking Right”

by Romona Weston

Memory verse for the week: “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” – Proverbs 23:7a

Monday

Scripture for the Day:

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheth me.” –Philippians 4:13

Today is the day to cleanse the mind of all the discouraging thoughts that Satan would have you think that would hinder you from being your best for God. Maybe you have said these things:

“I am not talented.”
“I can’t sing in the choir.”
“I can’t teach a Sunday school class.”
“There are many things I want to do, but I can I really be used?”

REMEMBER, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me.” Why don’t we get busy today and say, “I can!”

“We have all eternity to celebrate the victories, but only a few hours before sunset to win them.” – Amy Carmichael

Action for the Day: Share with each member of your family “I can” instead of “I can’t.” Fill the minds of your family with the encouragement to be what God wants you to be. Act now!

Tuesday

Scripture for the Day:

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whosoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” – Philippians 4:8

May times our words hide our thoughts, but our actions will ultimately reveal them. How often have you hear the words “I love you” or “I sure do think a lot of you” only to see the shallowness of them by the actions of the speaker.

If you are going to put meaning to your words, it must begin with your thought-life. Kind actions begin with kind thoughts. Remember our scripture for the day, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whosoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Man cannot escape the results of his thoughts; he becomes what he thinks.

Action for the Day: List four (4) good thoughts and share them with your family and think on them this day!

Wednesday

Scripture for the Day:

“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19

We often think upon the things we do not have instead of the many blessings that God has given us. Should we let anxiety and worry control our thoughts when God has promised He will supply all our needs? No bird ever fretted over not having enough but stored up for two winters, nor a dog over the number of bones that are hidden in the yard. The God who watched over every creature, who feeds and cares for each one, is the One who loves us even more.

So breathe the air then have faith that with every breath there will be more – “For my God shall all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Drink from the crystal stream, trusting there will be water for all – “For my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

Be a great believer. Do not let anxieties and worries control your life. “Little faith will bring your souls to heaven, but great faith will bring heaven to your souls.” – Charles Spurgeon

Action for the Day: List several of the good things with which God has blessed you and your family.

Thursday

Scripture for the Day:

“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever stat I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, ad I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.” – Philippians 4:11-12

Too often, Christians are unable to master the changes in their lives which lead to anger, strong feelings, resentment, hostilities, or hatred. Because of emotions that often accompany changing times, many prefer to maintain the status quo rather than risk changes that may rock the boat. The apostle Pail said, “I know what it is like to be abased and abound, yet with whatever changes, I will master my emotions and be content.”

Moods have a tendency to play tricks on the ones they control. Yesterday’s joy many times becomes today’s sadness, yet today’s sadness can grow into tomorrow’s joy. We must find that peace that passes all understanding that our emotions may be mastered. Then each day will lead to a more productive life. Be in control of your thoughts so that, as the apostle Paul, we can also say in every situation, “I am content.”

Action for the Day: Examine yourself to find which emotion controls you instead of you controlling that emotion. Work on mastering your emotions.

Friday

Scripture for the Day:

“Where there is no vision, there people perish.” – Proverbs 29:18a

There was a house in a certain neighborhood. The house was so rundown that no one wanted to live in it. Then one day a young couple saw the house and visualized what it could become. They saw hopes, where others saw ruins. When they finished remodeling the house, needless to say, it was a showpiece. The difference in the house was that others, when they saw the house, had no vision or dreams.

Our lives as Christians can be likened to that old house. When we give Jesus our lives, He takes over ownership; we are transformed into a new person. The repairs, though they are made daily, depend upon goals that we visualize for our lives.

So remember to dream BIG – set big goals for your Christian growth.

For without a vision, the people perish.

Action for the Day: List goals that can help you become a better Christian and visualize yourself doing these things.

Saturday

Scripture for the Day:

“In everything, give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

The parents of a serviceman who had lost his life in Vietnam attended a special service for war heroes at a local church. While at the services, they were impressed to give a thousand dollar check in the memory of their son. After receiving the check, the pastor of the church stood and announced what the visitors had done. Another mother leaned over and whispered to her husband, “Let’s give the same amount in the name of our boy.” The father said, “Why, what are you talking about – our son was in the war, but he did not lose his life.” The mother replied, “That’s just the point; let’s give it because he didn’t.”

How many times do we fail to think of the many things we are to be thankful for? Let’s start today and rejoice for what the Lord has done for your family, friends, and church.

Action for the Day: Call a friend or relative and tell them something that you have to be thankful for and rejoice with them!

Sunday

Scripture for the Day:

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke in easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30

How many times have we worried over jobs that have failed, words that have wounded, grudges undeserved, money lost, sorrows unhealed, goals not realized, loyalties betrayed and ambitions that were destroyed? Too many times we have let the pains of yesterday, with all its mistakes, cares, and tears, control what we do for God. We worry as if each of the above can be relived.

Also, what madness it is to worry about tomorrow and the bad to come. We need to concern ourselves with the present. “He who worries about calamities suffers them twice over.”

Christian, forget what is past and let God lead in the future, for He is far more capable than you. Do everything in your power to think upon the good things of God. For as a man thinketh, so is he.

Action for the Day: Think back on all the exciting things that influence you for God. For you will be a better person if you put these things to thought and practice.
