Before you sit down with your family to write your mission statement together, sit down with God and ask Him to reveal what His mission for your family is. Just as God has given each member of your family unique gifts and talents, He also has a unique mission for your family. So, you don’t need to create your mission statement, but discover the mission God already has in mind for your family.

You can even look up a sample family mission statement in the Bible to give you some ideas for yours. In Genesis 18:19, you’ll see God’s mission statement for Abraham’s family. You might already be familiar with Joshua’s family mission statement in Joshua 24:15. David’s mission statement is in 1 Kings 2:1-4. Stephanas’ family has a very straightforward mission statement in 1 Corinthians 16:15.

How to Write Your Family Mission Statement

When you’re ready to write your family’s mission statement, choose a time when the whole family can participate. Make sure no one’s hungry for dinner or ready for a nap. Your family members will be more interested in fulfilling a mission statement they helped to write, instead of just following one you write for them.

There’s no right or wrong way to write a family mission statement. An easy way to start is by asking a simple question like “What does family mean to you?” or or “What do you think God wants our family to be like?” and writing down your family’s answers. If you’re writing a mission statement with young children, you can write their answers down in colorful words and pictures. For older children, work with them to rewrite their ideas into sentences or a short paragraph.

How to Use Your Family Mission Statement

Everyone in your family should try to memorize your mission statement, too. It will be easier to follow if everyone knows it by memory.

Finally, apply your mission statement to your everyday life. When you have to make a family decision, or choose your priorities, talk about which choice will best help you fulfill your mission statement.
