Four Reasons You Need a Family Chore Chart

Why you should use chore charts:
Timing: One of the best things about having chore charts is that it allows your child to do their chores on their time. They know what is expected of them each day, and can do their chores at the time that works best for them. That way, if they want to go to a friend’s for the day, they can quickly do their chores before they leave, and not have to worry about it when they get back. It means that they know what they need to do each day, and can do it at the time that works best for them.
Ease: A chore chart works well for both parents and children. It means that the parents do not have to ask over and over, rather they can simply post the chore chart and explain to their children that they are expected to do their chores before they can play. This means that it is up to the child. It is easier for the children because they do not have to try and find mom and dad, or wait for them to get off the phone to know what their jobs are for the day. It also means being able to prepare for their day.
Reminder: A chore chart is a great way to always have a reminder of what is expected. When you have a chore chart for your kids, and you post it where they will see it, they will not need you to constantly remind them, instead they can have a visual reminder of what needs to be done.
Motivates: lastly, a chore chart motivates kids. There is something rewarding about being able to put a sticker on a box, cross off a list, or whatever your form of marking the chore completion. A chore chart can be very motivating to a kid because they know once their finite list is done, they are done. This motivates them to work faster and harder so that they can be done with chores and move on to something more enjoyable.
What kind of chore charts work best?:
The kind of chore chart that is going to work best for you and your family depends on several factors. For example, how old are your children? What are they capable of doing? How much time do your children have each day? Is it summer or during the school year?
If your children are teenagers, a chore chart with cutesie pictures and drawings is not necessary; a simple list and accounting system is fine. If your child is a toddler and can’t read, however, a list is not going to be very helpful, as they won’t know what it says, thus a picture of a bed, for “make bed” is going to be more appropriate. So, evaluate your life stage to determine which kind of chore chart works best for your family, but be sure it is simple to understand, that it has an accounting system (some way of indicating when the chore is completed), and that your children will follow it.
