Try making a collage with your child to make learning about your home state fun.
Materials needed: magazines, newspapers, scissors, glue, construction paper or poster board.
Making a collage is a really fun way to learn basic facts about your state. You can give them certain information about your state that they must include in the collage or just let them decide. I give my children guidelines that must be followed. Their collages have to have the state capital, state bird, flower, major economic features, major geographic features and famous people that have come from that state. After that, they can research further to add more layers and information to the collage. They learn interesting facts about our fifty states and have fun in the process.
Instructions for making your State Collage:
- Cut out the form of your state out of construction paper or poster board.
- Give your kids the required points they have to cover.
- Have your kids cut pictures out of magazines, newspaper and or print them off the internet.
- Glue the pictures on the collage in the appropriate space. (ie. state capital in approximate place)
Let your kids give you an oral presentation describing what they've learned from making the collage. (An introduction to public speaking never hurts).
We usually did one state per week. This gives you ample time to study the interesting things that come up while you are researching. My kids have found this to be an enjoyable alternative to just memorizing the states and capitals.
